“¿Cómo es que viniste a parar aquí? ¿Por qué Washington, por qué Tri-Cities?” 

“How did you end up here? Why Washington? Why Tri-Cities?”

Me preguntaban algunos compañeros del trabajo en el breakroom mientras nos tomábamos el quinto o sexto café de la noche, más para calentarnos y mantenernos despiertos durante todo el turno que por disfrute o "echar el chisme", como decimos coloquialmente. Entre break y break esa noche, cada uno contábamos nuestra historia, y demás está decir que todas son especiales, de superación, de supervivencia algunas... Conforme las iban contando, se les enjugaban los ojos de lágrimas a unos, a otros se les podía ver en su cara melancolía y nostalgia; menos mal que estábamos entre puros hombres (Y entre hombres no lloramos, dicen, ya solos nos soltamos como Magdalenas), si no ese break room hubiese sido un chilladero. 

Pero más allá de cada historia, de lo que nos motivó a dejar nuestra tierra, aquí estamos, y como dice una canción muy popular, "Porque aquí fue donde nos puso la vida", y ahora con la misma determinación, valentía y coraje con la que un día armamos la maleta (o la mochila) y emprendimos el viaje, debemos enfrentar los retos que día a día se nos presentan, buscar superarnos y lograr aquello que soñamos, ¿no es así? Estamos en el país de las oportunidades,

donde puedes ser lo que quieras ser, aprovechemos cada recurso y herramienta que aquí existen, y de manera gratuita la gran mayoría, capacitemonos y exploremos nuestros talentos, emprendamos negocios, desarrollemos una carrera universitaria, busquemos certificaciones o especializaciones en aquello en lo que ya somos buenos, ¡vamos a darle con todo, duro y a la cabeza, a todo lo que mueva! 

Que a nuestra historia todavía le falta escribir la mejor parte.

Some coworkers asked me some questions in the breakroom while we were having the fifth or sixth coffee of the night, more to warm ourselves up and stay awake during the whole shift than for enjoyment or gossiping. Between breaks that night, each of us was telling our story, and it goes without saying that they are all special — some about overcoming obstacles, others about survival….

As they told their stories, tears welled up in some of their eyes, while others had a melancholic and nostalgic look on their faces; it's a good thing we were among only men (and among men, we don't cry, they say; but when we're alone, we let it all out like Magdalenes), otherwise, that break room would have been a cry fest. 

But beyond each story, beyond what motivated each of us to leave our homeland, here we all are, as a very popular song says: "Because this is where life put us." And now with the same determination, courage, and bravery with which we once packed our suitcase (or backpack) and embarked on the journey, we must face the challenges that present themselves to us every day, seek to improve ourselves, and achieve what we dream of, right? We are in the land of opportunities, where you can be whatever you want to be. Let's take advantage of every resource and tool available here, many of which are free. Let's train ourselves and explore our talents, let's start businesses, pursue a university career, look for certifications or specializations in what we are already good at — let's go all out, hard and head-on, to succeed at everything we can! 

The best part of our story has yet to be written.
