Here is the interview description:

In this conversation, we speak with Steven Cole-Schwartz, Vice President of Grantmaking at Inatai Foundation, about the new Safety & Resilience Fund — a $2 million investment aimed at supporting community organizations in Washington facing growing physical, digital, and political threats.

During the interview, we discussed:

  • Why Inatai decided to create this fund at this time.
  • The types of threats community organizations in Washington are facing.
  • How the grants — ranging from $25,000 to $75,000 — can be used.
  • The importance of strengthening physical, digital, and organizational security.
  • The impact this fund could have on small and rural organizations in Yakima, the Tri-Cities, and other regions that have historically received less philanthropic investment.
  • How it will be determined which organizations receive support.
  • Why security has become a fundamental part of community work.

The fund prioritizes organizations led by and serving communities facing disproportionate risks, including immigrants, transgender and gender-diverse individuals, communities of color, and organizations located in historically underfunded regions.

This interview aims not only to explain how this new resource works, but also to understand the context that has led community organizations to view security as an increasingly urgent need.
