Shalom United Church of Christ will open a new public cooling center for Tri-Cities residents during periods of extreme heat this summer. The church facility complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The center will open when temperatures reach 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Shalom is working with other centers in the area to ensure their operating hours are scheduled in a way that provides the most relief for residents.
“This is a great opportunity to better serve our entire community, and it’s made possible with the support of Shalom’s congregational volunteers, donations, and monetary support,” said Melanie Childers, Shalom’s pastor. “I am so proud that we can offer a comfortable place to rest and recuperate on the days and evenings it’s needed most.”
The center will provide:
- - Electrical outlets for charging electronic devices and operating medical equipment
- - Restrooms
- - Snacks, Gatorade and water
- - Information about the current situation, and how to stay safe in heat
- - Face masks as needed
Service animals and well-behaved emotional support animals are permitted. Owners should expect to toilet and feed their animals, and should bring their own supplies.
Guests should also bring:
- - Prescribed medications and medical supplies
- - Electronic devices and charging cables
