A  beautiful, innovative exhibition entitled Markings: Traces and Impressions from Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) in Washington will be on display during the month of June at Gallery at the Park.

The juror for Markings: Traces and Impressions is Lesley Riley, an internationally-known mixed media artist, art quilter, instructor, and writer. In the past 25 years, she has taught classes globally, written ten books, and contributed to numerous other books and magazines. Riley often incorporates photography and cyanotype into her own quilt designs.

The theme of this exhibit focuses on the markings made by animals, the passage of time, and more. From the SAQA website:

Many things or beings make marks — an event in history, an animal’s foot, a painter’s brush, a written word, a glacier on rock, graffiti, sun on skin, a cruel remark, receding ocean tides on the shore, growth rings in a tree, the list goes on. What marks catch your attention? What marks bring you delight? What marks carry meaning in your life?

When selecting works, Riley focused on composition and the principles of design. She noticed nature was a recurring source of inspiration, with markings used to tell stories, convey emotion, and evoke both decay and beauty.

“Collectively, this exhibition celebrates the breadth and vitality of contemporary art quilting,” Riley says. “Each work reflects an individual voice, and together they form a compelling body of work that speaks to the many ways artists continue to expand the expressive language of fiber.”
