They’re here, they’re there, they’re everywhere! So beware! An obscure reference, perhaps, but this phrase still rings true when it comes to energy vampires. Seems like they are everywhere, and impossible to avoid!

So, what is an energy vampire?

Do you ever have a conversation with someone, and feel exhausted after it’s done? Perhaps they are complaining about something; and even though you feel compassion for them, they drain you. Maybe they are talking politics, and venting their rage for ‘outrageous behavior’ from the other side of the aisle. Maybe you even agree, but still feel emptied out when they finally walk away? Yep! An energy vampire just sucked the life right out of you!

Here’s what’s happening: Even if you agree or have compassion for the subject, there is an energy inequity between you and the other person, which is seeking balance. If your energy is high, loving, and bright, while theirs is low and filled with negativity, your energy will flow towards them to create equilibrium. Even if you brace yourself before they start, the energy flows — like water running downhill.

And you want to know the really nasty part? While your positive energy is flowing down to help lift them up, your energy field now has a deficit, and it sucks up their negativity! The energy void within is so powerful that it slurps up their negative energy. Those who are empathic tend to slurp this up even faster, because the empath is energetically programmed to absorb and heal wounded energy. If you are like me, it can take days to process that negativity and release it (or longer, if you don’t act consciously to counteract it).

Now, what can you do about it?

First, we need to clear out the absorbed negativity.

  1. Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down, and notice if any place in your body feels heavy — a sort of ‘stuck’ feeling. Is there pain, discomfort, a blockage, or weakness? Scan your whole body, noticing all the places where this heaviness exists, including discomfort from overuse, strains, or injuries.
  2. Next, visualize the discomfort as a dark, heavy color — perhaps gray or muddy brown. Imagine all the uncomfortable energy transforming into a mass of that color and hold it in your mind.
  3. Now, breathe light and love into the mass of color (empaths may find this easier to do, but anyone can do it with care and practice). Visualise the color beginning to lighten and brighten. As it lightens, imagine it naturally floating out of the body, or being released through the breath. Notice how you feel. Pain and discomfort might ease, or disappear altogether, because light and love replaced the dark stuff.

Once clear, it is time to shield up to protect yourself from the next situation!

You probably already use several kinds of shields; they just don’t seem to work with an energy vampire! The day I figured out how to protect myself, I was scheduled to see someone that I knew would need to vent their problems, and would drain me dry. Before I walked into the meeting, I whispered to myself, God, help me! Immediately, I saw threads of light weaving around me like chainmail. The mesh floated on top of my aura and wove itself under my feet.

When the negative person showed up, the mesh floated close to my body — comfy and protective. Nothing could penetrate it! Any negativity hit the mesh and instantly grounded out. When the person left, the mesh floated out and the spaces between the threads were open and clear.

To shield yourself, ask Divine Source to aid you (whatever that is for you). Use your imagination to see and feel the mesh being woven around you, then draw it in close, and allow yourself to relax. Once established, anytime you choose to notice it, its presence awakens. It is available to you day and night, forever. If at any time, you should willingly take on negativity (perhaps as an act of compassion), the load feels lighter, and is more easily transformed and released using the process mentioned earlier.

The world right now is a difficult place, and others may feel overburdened, needing to vent. With protections in place, we can still hold the line of compassion and show up in our full strength. Negativity holds no ground with us. We walk a sacred path of power and light, without fear of depletion.

Armor up, dear friends! Armor up!
