I fell in love with Jane Austen as a pre-teen, the first time I saw the 2005 film adaptation of Pride & Prejudice (known by many as ‘the Kiera Knightley version’). I watched it on DVD so many times that “Hannah’s watching P’n’P again!” became the family joke! I was so enamored by the film, I learned the title theme music on the piano, and when my piano teacher noticed my growing obsession and suggested I read the book, I did that too — admittedly with less enthusiasm than watching the film on repeat. The book, you see, could never give me the moment when Kiera Knightley, dripping in afternoon rain, exclaims to Mr. Darcy, “You are the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry!”

Since then, I have devoured every film adaptation of Austen’s novels and mooned over the beautiful costumes, quintessential British etiquette, withheld and unrequited feelings, and swoon-worthy English gentlemen’s attempts to win the hearts and hands of ‘tolerable’ women.

Last year, I began to ponder what it might be like to share my love of Jane Austen. I thought perhaps others would also enjoy afternoon tea, wearing beautiful gloves, and being asked for the honor of the next dance. I mentioned this dream to Nina Powers, a local musician who is also a friend, and together we formulated the idea of hosting a tea party combined with scenes from Jane Austen’s works.

The event will feature two one-act stage plays of scenes adapted from two of Austen’s most famous novels: ‘Emma’ and ‘Pride & Prejudice’. We will see some of the Tri-Cities most remarkable acting talent, and YES, there will be a ball and live regency-era music by Nina Powers! If you wish, please also join us for the tea party before the show.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in their Austen-best for this glorious outdoor Spring event! I hope to make Jane Austen more accessible to the general public by creating abbreviated versions of her work in an immersive environment, without sacrificing the whimsy and strong characters that hardcore Austen fans hold dear.

Event date: May 28-30, 2026
