Narrated by Morrigan Crowe

It’s August, it’s hot as hell, and we just survived several intense astrological events. It is no surprise, then, that when I pulled some cards for our monthly pick-a-card reading together, I noticed very strong themes of correcting isolation.

I asked the cards what we needed to hear to let ourselves shine a bit more (in time for Leo season, of course). It would seem that many of us have collectively turned inward, checked out, and are barely hanging on in one way or another, to varying degrees of intensity. It is time to step back into the light again. But each of us has a different path to doing so.

With that said, take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to be drawn to the message that is meant for you. Pick a number (1, 2, or 3), close your eyes and let yourself point at random, or use whatever method you’d prefer to choose between the options below. You can, of course, be drawn to more than one. As always, this reading is meant to be just a starting point for reflection; so don’t forget to journal, meditate, or get further readings for a more personalized experience.

CARD ONE: FIVE OF PENTACLES

Our first messenger is the Five of Pentacles. This card can be a bit of a harder lesson at times, for it represents things like material loss, lack of security, and even self-sabotage. This card appears when you are feeling like you’ve been left on your own to solve your problems. There are themes here of isolation and helplessness. The good news is that it also comes with the message that relief is nearby, and that your current struggle is temporary.

In the context of our reading, the appearance of the Five of Pentacles means that the biggest barriers to letting yourself shine right now are the tangible obstacles life is throwing at you. It is hard to shine when you feel like you are constantly battling challenges. This card typically appears when it is time to do the brave thing and ask for help — in this case, not just emotional help, but tangible assistance. That can mean asking for financial help, looking into resources you might be resistant to accept, or asking your support system to help you organize your time better.

Whether it be money, time, or energy you are short on right now, it is important to get some sort of balance back. There are some things we cannot control, but there are also times we are holding ourselves back out of fear.

CARD TWO: FOUR OF CUPS

If you are drawn to this section, it is time to get back to your roots. The Four of Cups is interesting, because it can represent meditation and insightfulness as well as apathy and detachment. It is a time to turn inward and hear your own voice so you know which opportunities to chase and which ones are meant to pass you by. Issues can arise when you are no longer connected to your ‘why’, and start feeling like you either have to accept everything that comes your way, or become so burnt out that you have to detach from everything. This is not a bad card at all, but it is an important message that it’s time to handle yourself with some care and inner wisdom.

You need to get back to basics with your emotional or spiritual routine. You may have been developing yourself around what others expect of you a bit too much, and it’s time to grow in your own direction for a bit. It is not a bad thing to consider others and to tend to those you care about, but when you stop listening to yourself, you’re at risk of doing things for the wrong reasons.

Spiritually speaking, be a little more self-focused and get grounded. You are meant to shine as yourself, not a version of yourself that others find more convenient. Spend some time meditating, getting into hobbies you enjoy, and reflecting on what it is you need right now.

CARD THREE: THE HERMIT (REVERSED)

The messenger for this section is The Hermit. This card brings messages of seeking wisdom, introspection, and making some quiet but very impactful spiritual gains. For this reading, however, The Hermit is in the reversed position, which turns its energy more towards social withdrawal. This type of isolation happens when you become too burnt out or disappointed by your fellow humans, and begin to pull away from others in order to protect yourself emotionally. The Hermit teaches us that while there are times to turn inward, we are meant to come back to the outside world, eventually.

If this is the message that found you, you may be getting a little stuck in the hermit stage of your journey, which can lead you to potentially become detached — not just from other people, but from your own lived experience. Be wary of escapism right now. It’s time to come out of your hermit mode! Trust the guidance of  your own voice. That voice needs balance, and that is where community comes in. In order to bring your shine to the surface, you are called to grow the wisdom you have gained, and compliment it with the experiences of others. There may be some alternative points of views that you will miss, otherwise.

‘Hermit’ is a phase of the journey; it is not meant to be your permanent state of being. Come up for air every once in a while.
