The 17th annual Tri-Cities International Film Festival (TRIFI) kicks off on Friday, November 7, continuing its mission to uplift and celebrate independently-made local, national, and international films! Screenings will be held through the weekend at the Richland Players Theater and the Richland Community Center.

Friday, November 7 (Richland Players Theater)

What’s On? Comedy, documentary, thriller/mystery, and horror short films; and documentary and animation feature-length films.

Highlights:

All Our Relations: Tribute to the Orca documents the ancient kinship of Indigenous communities with orcas and salmon, and the importance of reciprocity in our relationship with our caretaker, Mother Nature.

Video Dreams: A VHS Massacre Story chronicles a thirty-year odyssey to get onto the shelves of Blockbuster Video and beyond. It features Lloyd Kaufman (creator of The Toxic Avenger, a superhero comedy film franchise beginning in 1984) and several other filmmakers of that era. The film offers a rare insider's perspective on a vital, often overlooked corner of cinema history — the low-budget film movement.

Saturday, November 8 (Richland Players Theater)

What’s On? Animation, drama, fan fiction, and science fiction/fantasy short films, documentary feature films, and the TRIFI 72-hour Film Challenge screening (a popular event, not to be missed! Get your tickets early for this one!)

Highlights:

To Use a Mountain is a documentary feature film which interrogates the complex interplay between the physics, geology, and democracy surrounding six potential nuclear waste disposal sites, including Yucca Mountain and our local Hanford site.

Requiem for a Hornet is a poignant fan fiction, telling the story of aging superhero Green Hornet. It was filmed and produced right here in the Tri-Cities!

Documentary feature Never Perfect, Never Over: An Unauthorized History of Harm poses the question: “How do we deal with the inevitable reality of drug use in a way that results in the least amount of harm?” At the heart of this story stands Dave Purchase, a charismatic drug and alcohol counselor from Tacoma who has spent decades trying to answer that question. At the height of the HIV epidemic, Dave opened the first legally-sanctioned syringe exchange in the United States and kick-started the global Harm Reduction movement.

The TRIFI 72-hour Film Challenge requires teams of local filmmakers to write, shoot, and edit a 5-minute film in 72 hours. The Challenge is designed to test and stretch filmmakers’ capabilities, and to showcase local filmmaking efforts.

Sunday, November 9 (Richland Community Center)

What’s On? A few new shorts, screenings of several award-winning shorts and feature films, and a re-screening of the TRIFI 72-hour Film Challenge winners.

Highlights:

The winning films from our brand-new Special Award categories: Student Filmmaker, Woman Filmmaker, Pacific Northwest Filmmaker, LGBTQIA+ Filmmaker, and BIPOC Filmmaker.
